ABSTRACT

Proven effective and widely practiced during the COVID-19 pandemic, online psychotherapy is today a fundamental tool in the toolbox of the psychoanalyst and the psychotherapist: to be studied in depth in its possible indications and counter-indications and to be included in the training programs of our training schools. Our thesis is that it does not represent a risk, but rather the stimulus to progress for our discipline. ABSTRACT

In response to the papers in this issue by Schoen, Petrucelli and Sands, the author takes up their themes of theorizing and working clinically with embodiment by way of a string of associations: first to a documentary film by performance artist, K8 Hardy, and then to a quote by French psychoanalyst Didier Anzieu. The author then uses these associations, inspired by the three papers, to pose questions about how we might expand our thinking and practice around embodiment to include the virtual, providing examples from her clinical practice. ABSTRACT

The article offers a reflection on the experience of the Marches Group of the Italian Society of Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy for Children, Adolescents and Couples during lockdown. Group members were able to share their thoughts from a distance during the emergency created by Covid-19 and this experience also continued subsequently. The group proved to be an important resource during this difficult period as it allowed members' minds to continue thinking while the world had come to a halt. The article dwells on a clinical case that was shared during the group's evening meetings. The protagonist was a girl in the latency period, whose symptoms arose during the Covid emergency. The group acted as a container and fostered thoughts and associations that supported the psychotherapist in this clinical experience. The group sharing was equally important for helping members to leave the protective shell of their homes when everything got going again. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

This book brings together leading international psychoanalysts to discuss what psychoanalysis can offer to people who have experienced trauma, flight, and migration. The four parts of the book cover several elements of this work, including psychoanalytic projects beyond the couch, and collaboration with the UN. Each chapter presents an example of the applications of psychoanalysis with a specific group or in a particular context, from working with refugees in China to understanding the experiences of women who have witnessed political violence in Peru. Trauma, flight, and migration have become signatures of our time. Towards the end of 2021 there were 82.4 million migrants and refugees seeking asylum from their countries of origin in countries far away from war, civil unrest, and economic turmoil. Migrants and refugees often suffer from mental health problems, having experienced crises caused by dislocation from their homes, with a loss of all that is familiar. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world in a previously unimaginable way within a very short time. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased social injustice: the gap between the privileged and the underprivileged, the rich and the poor, has widened. Many of the psychoanalysts who have written chapters for this book will address the profound experience of limitation and loss in the face of pervasive structural violence in the 21st century. The book reveals the thinking and work of a small group of the many psychoanalysts who are currently working in the humanitarian field. The innovative book will be essential reading for psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists looking to learn more about working with people who have experienced the impact of traumatic movement or migration. ABSTRACT

The intervation proposed by the Febrapsi Psychoanalytic Observatory (PO), a clinical-political writing device of psychoanalysts, is analyzed for the secondary elaboration of the events that produce the current malaise during the Coronavirus pandemic. The texts are written in the format of essays, authorial, reflective, and expressing the author's personal experience with the event. In the process, five times are identified: Time Zero, that of sociopolitical, cultural and institutional events that affect us;Time One follows, constituted by the elaboration of psychoanalysts, through essays, advancing then to the collective dialogic elaboration between peers, Time Two;then, there is the elaboration of the team of curators in the writing of editorials, Time Three;Time Four is characterized by the reader's access to these elaborations, through the social media used by the Observatory. It is concluded that the PO is an institutional way of extensive clinical practice. In the intervention vertex, the possibility of producing effects on the different subjects reached by the device. ABSTRACT

Background: Uncertainty is consubstantial with psychoanalytic practice, which is based on an openness to the unknown. The fundamental rule institutes the experience on which the treatment is based, and is, at the same time, the most appropriate methodological answer to the logics of infantile sexuality and the motor of its subjective appropriation. Objectives: To this fertile uncertainty, the author opposes an uncertainty based on vital dependancy that, on account of passionate bonding, tends to freeze the analytic process and threatens to destroy the cure. Therefore, it is a question of problematizing the regime of uncertainty proper to limit-experiences. This experience of "death struggle against death" is engaged when an apparently hopeless hold is exerted on a human being and dispossesses him/her "of an impersonal right to life" (N. Zaltzman, 1998). What resources does psychoanalytic practice have in such a context? Method: The author draws on both his clinical practice as a psychoanalyst and his work as a supervisor of teams confronted with situations of extreme precarity. Anthropological and artistic fields are also called upon to explore the logic of the limit-experience. The author examines the concept of the anarchist drive theorized by Nathalie Zaltzman: he proposes a critical re-examination while underlining its great value on the clinical level. In the wake of this questioning, the author questions psychoanalysis with regard to the environmental crisis, conceived of a limit-experience to come. Results: What resources does psychoanalysis possess in its struggles with limit-experiences? Clinical work in the anarchist regime secures the constitution of a singular resistance in the heart of the death zones. Its vocation is to psychically arm subjects with a capacity to enjoy existence in spite of everything, without sinking into psychosis, apathy, or alienation. Marked by a limit-experience (the Covid-19 crisis, for example), a psychoanalysis worked-through by the anarchist drive can, in return, undertake the work of re-examining of its foundations and of displacing its founding paradigms. Conclusion: This text questions the clinical and theoretical paradigm shifts required by a specific regime of uncertainty, that of the limit-experience. The clinical questioning is coupled with an anthropological questioning, against the background of the environmental crisis. This text constitutes a first approach and tries to lay down some milestones in the heart of a considerable construction site. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

This work is a group reflection which resulted from the storm caused by the covid-19 pandemic. The turbulence at first brought the elective seminar. The Thought of Thomas Ogden, composed by the training analyst and participants of the Brazilian Psychoanalysis Society of Sao Paulo, to a relative standstill. The tremendous impact devastated our daily lives in a universal way. New configurations regarding the media, such as online platforms, were gradually created or re-invented amid the storms. In the specific case of this group, coping was gradually stimulated in a particular way by the training analyst's management and continence, by the group's motivation, and mainly by the ideas of the author Thomas Ogden, the central topic of the elective seminar. Countless chapters suggested by the training analyst kept on guiding and interlocking the group's affectional bonds between theory and technique. Each participant, in their singularity, had peculiar experiences and suffered from anxieties facing the new, due to the diversity of behavior reactions within the analytical field and in life, with the arrival of the pandemic. The objective of this paper is to show how the storm was crossed, and also to explain how the training analyst, metaphorically representing a compass, was able to, little by little, guide the group, and thus continue the seminar. ABSTRACT

The brutal announcement of the closure of all public places and the general lockdown declared by the French government on the evening of Saturday, March 14, 2020, as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic threw the population into anxiety, panic, isolation, disarray and (for some) panic, all overnight. This announcement marked not a transition but a break. Analysts and psychoanalysts found themselves in an unprecedented situation and had to find ways to continue their analytical work, despite this rupture imposed from outside, this collective trauma that has already created Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in some and will keep on doing so. Shock waves from this trauma are likely to be felt for a shorter or longer period of time. The collective trauma that the explosion of the AZF factory represented for the city of Toulouse in 2001 manifested itself in my clinic for several years. The real happens without warning and devastates the fragments of humanity that its sweeps away along its path. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

If I had to name the task that the coronavirus entrusts us with, I would use the ancient Latin expression vitam instituere. Without retracing its history-it is a passage from Demosthenes, quoted by the Roman jurist Marcianus in the Digest-we may focus on its most current meaning. At a time when human life appears to be threatened and overpowered by death, our common effort can only be that of 'establishing' it again and again. What else, after all, is life if not this continuous 'establishment', the capacity to create ever new meanings. It is in this sense that Hannah Arendt, and before her Augustine, said that we, mankind, constitute a beginning because our first action is to come into the world, starting something that was not before. This first beginning was followed by another, a further founding act, constituted by language-the French psychoanalyst Pierre Legendre called it a second birth. It is from this birth that the city and political life originate, providing biological life with a historical horizon. This horizon is not in contrast with the world of nature, rather it traverses it in all its extension. The space of logos, and then of nomos, however autonomous in its wealth of configurations, has never become separate from that of bios. On the contrary, their relationship has become increasingly closer, to the point it is impossible to talk about politics by removing it from the sphere in which life is generated. ABSTRACT

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is recognized as a medically necessary treatment for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (Association of Professional Behavior Analysts, 2020). The use of telehealth to deliver ABA-based services has been on the rise over the past decade, yet during the initial COVID-19 stay home orders of March 2020, there was limited research on telehealth implementation guidelines for providers. A convergent mixed-methods research design was used to examine the experiences of ABA-based service providers as they delivered services via telehealth to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families during the initial months of that transition. Most survey respondents had less than 3 months experience delivering ABA-based services via telehealth. Findings from the survey revealed themes related to telehealth service delivery experiences. Notably, ABA-based service providers' decision-making process for transitioning to telehealth, telehealth service delivery practices that were adopted and reported by respondents, and professional development experiences related to telehealth. Implication for research and practice are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

This elaborate is inspired by the observation of some interactions among the psychoanalyst and the patient in the actual historic frame, in which the interruption of the canonic setting, the passage to remote therapy and especially the appearance of feelings of the psychoanalyst symmetric to the ones of the patient in the relational field (the fear, the difficulty in handling the unknown), have lead to the opportunity for the patient to offer any kind of help to the psychoanalyst himself. These actions, despite carrying the risk of an acting, are instead elaborated and comprehended as indicators of a precious emancipative moment, which leads the patient to experiencing himself as capable of offering empathetically something valid, and the analyst as someone closer and more reachable, establishing the beginning of a phase of elaboration on a possible conclusion of the analysis. ABSTRACT

Psychoanalysis is a method of treatment applied through the establishment and maintenance of a structured setting, which enables for the development of the analytical process. In atypical times in face of the Covid-19 Pandemic, reflections on changing the setting and the consequences of online psychoanalysis are necessary. The intention of this study was to identify the experiences and perceptions of analysts about virtual analytical practice. To this end, a study was carried out to survey experiences with eight training analysts who are members of a Psychoanalytic Society affiliated to the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), by applying a questionnaire about their clinical experiences with online treatment. The findings suggest that virtual treatment is a workable tool, although it may present some challenges to the analytical practice. The challenges most pointed by the professionals were: instabilities of digital platforms, maintenance of the setting, absence of physical presence, difficulties with neutrality and with fluctuating attention. We warn for the need for more clinical and empirical studies on this subject, in order to understand deeply the potential benefits and/or possible challenges of this type of treatment, as well as possible indications and contraindications of these analyses. ABSTRACT

The need for social isolation prompted psychoanalysts to think about ways to receive psychic distressed babies and their families. If online analysis with adults is considered challenging, how can the use of this technology in the parent-infant clinic be sustained? We present reflections from clinical vignettes, in the interface with impacts on technique and ethics. Faced with the need to ensure a preventive approach, we ask: How to preserve the setting, the analyst's interior framework, the field of language, the fine observation of what emanates from the baby and his/her parents? How to get in touch with the inner worlds of analyst, parents, and the baby, and use them online? Would the gaze continue to exercise the primordial function of summoning and appealing in the digital interface? By changing our view, we shift within the analytical setting, admitting the possibility of a new symbolic perspective, a new relationship with the technique, with us, with the other, with the knowing/not knowing. We bet on the digital interface in the parent-infant online clinic, provided the technical and ethical implications that should guide the clinical orientation are considered, above fads and emergency needs, but into psychic urgency. ABSTRACT

Considering the gradual return to the onsite sessions at her consulting room, the author ponders about the experience of exclusively holding online sessions for eighteen months, during the recent pandemic caused by Coronavirus. She tries to make sense of the repercussions on the psychoanalytical technique, particularly taking into account the fact that virtual sessions made treatment continuity possible, but in an external arrangement that is strikingly different form the usual, starting with patients becoming responsible for finding a suitable place to hold their sessions, thus inverting the traditional provision, that is, a private space provided by the analyst, one that is specially designed for psychoanalysis. Analyst/analysand roles, characterized by the use of the couch, have become diverse due to this change. Through clinical vignettes, the author starts acknowledging the possibility of making psychoanalysis, the psychoanalytical process happen in this "alternative" model. And she wonders which would be conditions to make this happen. The method's characteristic listening might be the most recognizable invariable. The search for turning latent into audible content, for giving meaning to the experience remained, as well the experience of intense emotions in this field. However, more inquiries remain to be considered, we are left with more questions than answers. What has also become clear is that the analytical method can indeed take place regardless of factual reality. Such confirmation imposes several considerations. The paper proposes that the study of practice vicissitudes in this other dimension, which is virtual, established through technology, in particular the questioning of enshrined principles as definers, may lead to the production of more knowledge and to the development of this discipline. Yet, this can only happen if we encourage ourselves to cast doubt on those enshrined principles. A escuta caracteristica do metodo talvez seja a invariante mais reconhecivel. ABSTRACT

The outbreak in 2020 of the Covid-19 syndrome was a moment of upheaval in French society and profound transformations in professional spaces, psychoanalytic practice not escaping this trend. To cope with the effects of confinement, psychoanalysts have tried to artificially recreate the conditions of the sessions in attendance. However, the individual and collective analysis of the practical, theoretical and political consequences of such a choice has hardly been carried out. This article returns to these unthinkable principles based on the French and Brazilian cases. In particular, it insists on the place of the bodies present in transferential dynamics, and on the risks that the use of digital tools places on them, unbeknownst to analysts. © Martin Média.
